As we have begun our Arts unit about the role of women in this and the past centuries as depicted in animated film, we have been discussing how women's roles used to be very different from what we now know.
This unit is in chronological order, so we have not yet reached modern times. However, we have so far had great conversations in class about the portrayal of these women. I think it has been eye opening for many of our students to realize women have not always had an 'equal' relationship in society.
We have finished two films, and students need to reflect upon, and answer, the following questions (these questions stem directly from our class discussions):
1) What year was Snow White made?
2) What are Snow White's characteristics (how does she behave)?
3) What year was Cinderella made?
4) What are Cinderella's characteristics (how does she behave and what does she believe and do)?
5) Is Cinderella different from Snow White. If so, how?
6) How many years seperate the two films and what major world event happened in between the films?
7) Is there any change ('any change' meaning change no matter how big or small) in the portrayal of female characters between the two. If so, what is it?
8) Which two ways are women portrayed? (Is there and 'in between' or are all women portrayed in only one of two ways?)
Our discussion and work on women's roles will continue, including looking at the changes in how women are portrayed (and how static their characters are) through to today, including the evolving role of evil vs. good characters.
