Many people might be surprised by how much one can learn from an animated film. In truth, all films, animated or live-action, reflect the time period in which they were made. This is as true of Disney films as any other.
This term, we will be examining certain Disney movies in order to clearly determine the role that society assigned to women from the 1930's to present day. Students will be engaged in discussion on the portrayal of female characters over the decades. We will answer the following questions for each film:
1. How does the main female character act and speak?
2. What does the main female character do?
3. Does she have a talent?
4. How do others expect her to act?
5. How are other female characters portrayed? (Like Dickens and much of Western Literature, women are often portrayed as being at either end of a spectrum, either angels to be admired or as evil. There is often no 'in between.')
6. How do the roles of women change throughout the 20th and 21st century?
