Yes, Parents, YOU have homework! I am hoping you will write (or email) next weekend and let me know how your child did as a 'parent.' Starting Monday morning at 8:40 to next Friday (I know it is a pro-d) at 2:30, they must do their best to care for their baby at all times, including finding a babysitter while they go to extra-curricular activities.
I have done this experiment for many years, and the learning experience for kids is great.
I have explained to students that I accept they will make mistakes. They will not be penalised if they make mistakes, ONLY if they do not tell me of the mistakes.
We have discussed this a lot in class. Students will be writing a series of journals to accompany their journey next week as a parent. If they make a mistake (e.g. leave their baby on the couch while eating dinner), they need to write about it and what could have happened had the baby been real.
There is also in-class work and discussions.
